Posting on Zillow or Getting Featured in Dwell?

During one of my recent shoots I got asked by a client, “why don’t my listing photos look like the ones in Elle Decor?”

At first I thought they were unhappy with the quality, but after digging a little deeper, I figured it was a fair question.

They’re two completely different jobs.

Real Estate Photography: Show Everything

When I shoot a listing, my job is simple: show the space honestly. Buyers need to see the layout, ow rooms connect and how light comes in. It also helps to get an idea of whether their furniture will fit, or if they’ll need to invest in new furniture. I’m shooting from corners with wide angles and trying to keep everything bright and clear. No mystery, and very little drama; “here’s the living room, here’s the kitchen, here’s what you’re getting.” This works for selling houses. Agents need photos that answer questions and get people to schedule tours. The goal is clarity, speed, and eventually, a decision.

Editorial Photography: Show the Vibe

Magazine work is different. I’m not trying to document every square foot, I’m trying to make you feel something.

With these photos, I tend for focus on tighter shots with dramatic lighting. This helps details like pillows, flowers, and that perfect coffee mug on the counter stand out. It’s less about “how big is this bedroom” and more about “imagine waking up here Sunday morning.” These photos are meant to inspire. I tailor them for designers building portfolios, brands telling their story, or anyone going after a magazine feature.

Which One Do You Need?

Selling a house? Real estate photography. It’s clear, honest, and shows the whole space effectively. Building a design portfolio or pitching to magazines? Editorial work gives you room to be creative. Sometimes mixing both makes sense. High-end listings can use a few editorial-style shots to stand out. You’ll notice a lot of shots like that in my gallery. A couple magazine-quality images in your gallery can make people stop scrolling and actually pay attention.

The Real Difference

Real estate photos answer questions. Editorial photos create desire. Most of the time you need one or the other. Sometimes you can benefit from both. It all depends what you’re trying to accomplish and who you’re trying to appeal to.
